ABC's

On our vacation just over a week ago, my 4  year old niece couldn't believe that the boys knew their ABC's...and even more amazed when they sang BOTH versions!  For those of you who still doubt....

Where's my Sun?

We noticed a bit of a possessive side to Lincoln a few months ago.  He was still in Toddlers, and referred to his teacher as "My Miss Kayla".

It quickly turned into My Mommy and My Daddy.

This was new for us, as with twins, everything is "ours", and he never applied it to toys, so it's just been a cute phase.

However, in the past few weeks, he's taken possession of the sun.

With the long days of summer, it was always light out when the boys were awake.  When the sun wasn't shining, it was usually raining.  Now, the days are getting shorter, and the gray skies are settling in.  I don't think Lincoln is a fan of the fall, as he keeps asking, "Where's my sun?"

He asks multiple times a day:

  • He asks each morning, and we explain that the sun is still sleeping.
  • He asks when we pick him up from daycare, and we explain that it is hiding behind the clouds.
  • He asks again as we are putting him to bed, and we tell him the sun went to bed, just like he is.
I hope that someday he will appreciate the beauty of the changing leaves, the warmth of sweaters and coats, the fever of college football, and learn to love fall like his Mommy.  But in the meantime, please keep us in your prayers, cause it could be a long winter of searching for Lincoln's sun.

Saturday stuff

A few weeks ago on Saturday morning, I took the boys to the doctor's office to get their flu shots.

This year, they are old enough to do the Flu Mist instead of the shots.  They put the vaccine in their nose!  Brian was in the middle of fertilizing the lawn, so I decided I would take the boys to the doctor by myself.
The boys are so good when it's just me taking them places.  They both walked into the doctor's office, and checked out the fish tank while I signed them in.  They happily followed the nurse back into the exam room, and went straight for the books.

Jackson was pretty focused on the books, so we did Lincoln's vaccine first.  We practiced "smelling flowers" a few times, then we did the vaccine.  He did really great!  So much better than holding them for the shot, then holding them until they stop crying!

As usual, Jackson was a little bit apprehensive of the whole thing, so I held him on my lap.  After the first spray though, he caught on and he did great taking his vaccine too.

Now, we just need to get Daddy his flu shot, then we'll all be set for winter!

Since the boys were so good for their "flu shots", they wanted to go shopping, so off we went to Costco.  I got most of my shopping done, and the boys got lots of tasty treats, so we were all happy!

After shopping, we came home, had some lunch, and put the boys down for a nap.  When they woke up, we went shopping again - this time for new shoes for the boys.  Wow - I knew they were growing, but shoe shopping definitely confirmed it!  The boys went from a size 8 to a size 10 and 10 1/2!  Their shoes look like real people shoes now!

After shoe shopping, we grabbed some dinner and brought it home to eat.  A quick bath, and we watched some Happy Feet 2, then put the boys to bed.

All in all, a great and productive Saturday!

Hamburger!

We live very close to a shopping/eating meca.  Just about any restaurant you can think of is located within 3 miles of our house.

But it's not the restaurant signs that catch the attention of our boys.  Nope, it's the hamburgers!

Occasionally, we drive by Frisch's, a Cincinnati favorite.  As most people know, Frisch's restaurants ALWAYS have a Big Boy out front.  Anytime we get near it, the boys call out "Hamburger!  It's the big hamburger!"

I hope the Big Boy doesn't get jealous, but the boys recently noticed a big cheeseburger on a billboard near the Steak and Shake.  We are surrounded by hamburgers!

Sweet, Sweet Lincoln

I have a lot of stories to share with you, and I'm getting there, but here is one that just can't wait.

Driving home from work last night, Brian shared with me the highlight of his week.  It happened at dinner a few nights ago.  I don't remember how it started, but out of the blue Lincoln says, "You are the BEST Daddy!"  It was perfect, as when Brian gets frustrated with the boys, he often times feels like he isn't a good daddy, so hearing Lincoln say he is the best, without prompting, made Brian's week.

After we picked the boys up from school, we headed to Sam's Club for some milk.  Jackson somehow hit Lincoln's head.  All of a sudden, my sweet little Lincoln says, "Daddy, can you kiss it and make it better?"

My heart melted.

Chickadees update

I was really starting to worry about this new Chickadee room.

Monday morning was awful dropping the boys off.  They cried almost as hard as they did last week.  I thought it was going to be another long week.

Then, Jackson woke up Monday night around 3:30, and was insistent that he did NOT want to go to Chickadees!

I'm not sure what changed in the next 3 1/2 hours, but when Brian dropped the boys off yesterday morning at 7, he said they were both fine - they didn't even cry!

First, I thought maybe they just didn't want to be away from me (as I spent more time with them when we were on vacation than Brian did).  But I was pleasantly surprised this morning when we pulled into daycare, and both of the boys were SMILING as Miss Katie opened the truck door!  There were no tears - just excitement to go to school and see their friends and play all day.

Thank you Lord for helping us finally turn that corner!

Boys first fair experience

The Williams County Fair opened on Saturday of this past weekend.  Brian couldn't remember ever going to a county fair, and we knew the boys would love seeing the animals, so we decided to head over to the fair on Sunday before coming home.

Overall, it was a great experience for all of us.

We started out walking through the sheep barn, and surprisingly, the boys were a bit apprehensive.  I think they were getting hungry, as it was lunch time.  The cow barn scared Jackson a bit, as the cows weren't in stalls.  He was fine as long as Mommy was holding him.

Outside the cow barn, there was a man brushing and grooming a cow, and the boys stopped to watch what he was doing.  The kind man asked if the boys wanted to pet the cow...Jackson wanted no part of it, but Lincoln stepped right up and said "Yes - pet the cow!".  I handed Lincoln over the fence to the man (a total stranger, but that didn't bother Lincoln), and Lincoln reached over and pet the cow.  I will never forget the smile on his face!

We decided it was time to find something to eat, so we hit the midway.  The first thing we stubled across was the milkshake booth.  They are just as good as they have ever been, and the boys were much happier with their milkshake in hand.  Jackson even made me giggle when I caught him with a "milkshake mustache".

We continued our walk, and ran into one of my co-workers from years ago.  It had been probably 5 years since I had seen her.  Although it was brief, it was so good to see her, meet her kids and see how much they had grown.

Next, we were off to find a sausage sandwich.  We ordered 3 sandwiches - one for Brian, one for me, and one for the boys to share.  Well, that didn't go over well - both the boys wanted their own sandwich.  One of the boys snagged Brians, and he had to go and buy another one for himself.  Jackson ate all of his sausage patty, but only about half of the bun.  Lincoln ate his whole bun, and about 3/4 of his sausage patty, so it wasn't money wasted.  These boys are growing up way too fast!

After getting some food in our bellies, we decided to head back over toward the animals to find the rabbits.  We were hoping to hold Alyssa and Zoe's rabbits, but technology failed us in getting everyone together at one place.  The boys however were quite brave - reaching through the cages and petting all the bunnies.  The were squealing so loud that my mom thought they were crying at first, until she saw their little faces all lit up over the excitement.  Next time we are home, we definitely need to make a trip out to Wes' barn to see all the animals!

After the rabbits, we were off walking again to see what other delicious food we could find.  The boys noticed the train and some of the other games, and were infatuated.  However, our time was limited, so we didn't ride any, but will definitely be spending a day at the fair next year!

To wrap up our trip, we headed to the donut stand.  I got a half dozen for the 4 of us to share, and later wished we'd gotten a full dozen.  I had forgotten how good fresh donuts are!  Plus, I wanted the maple frosting, and somehow got stuck with the chocolate - as Jackson HAD to have a frosted donut!

After our donuts, we headed off to the van for new diapers and milk.  We said our goodbyes to Mawmaw and Pawpaw, and headed for Cincinnati.  The boys were asleep after just a few miles, and it was a quiet ride home.

Definitely a great first fair experience, and we can't wait for next year to head back and see the animals, ride the rides, and of course, indulge in all the fair food!  Plus, it's always nice to see those friendly faces that we haven't seen in a while!

20 Year class reunion - for ME

Saturday night was my 20 year class reunion!

Eleven of my 50+ classmates were able to join us, including Lisa who traveled in from Portland for the event.  It was a great evening!  You can always count on a good meal when you go to Sam's, as well as ice cold beverages.  But the best thing was catching up with my classmates, hearing about their families, their jobs, and what they have been up to for the last 20 years.

Lisa brought along our Senior Prophesy, which we all got a good laugh out of.  She also brought along all of the gradeschool pictures, and Senior pictures from the class.

It was a great night, and everyone enjoyed it immensely.  Can't wait to do it again in 5 years, and hopefully more classmates will be able to attend!

Weekend at Mawmaw and Pawpaws

After a very long week at Chickadees, the boys were SO EXCITED to head to Mawmaw and Pawpaw's house this past weekend.

We were able to get an early start and were on the road about 4:45 - which was good, as we hit storms along the way.  We stopped in Greenville for dinner around 6:30, which is always an adventure.  We picked Taco Bell - thinking it would be faster than other options - but it still took an hour for the boys to eat a bean burritto.

Shortly after getting back on the road, Lincoln went to sleep.  Jackson decided to put a show on for Brian and me by singing his ABCs.  He sings his ABC's a lot (and asks to have the CD player play the ABC song too), so this wasn't surprising - except that he was singing a different version of the ABC's!  I'm sure most of you are thinking "there's more than one version of the ABC's", but yes, there is.  He was singing the ABC song from Super Why!  It was so cute...he would even say "We sang the alphabet" at the end like the pig says - until about the 50th time he sang it.  He sang all the way to Van Wert, and only succumbed to sleep after we stopped to fill up with gas.

The boys woke up when we arrived at my parents, but weren't quite as outgoing as usual.  They played shy with Mawmaw and Pawpaw, and then decided to go and sit on the couch and watch TV instead of socializing.  We were hoping they would go to sleep, but no luck.  After about an hour of visiting with my parents, Brian took the boys upstairs to bed.

Sleeping was rough.  The boys are in a "transitional" stage right now.  We have their cribs at home yet, but traveling is tricky.  They are too big for sleeping in a pack and play, but not quite ready to sleep in a big bed yet.  My parents have one Toddler bed - and I think we need to find them another one.  We tried putting both the boys in the one bed (at opposite ends), and somewhere around 2:30 in the morning, Jackson either fell out or crawled out of the Toddler bed.  I found him under the full bed in their bedroom, crying.  In an attempt to not wake Lincoln, I put Jackson in our bed.  Boy, was that a mistake!

Jackson doesn't sit still, even when he is sound asleep.  He was all over the bed - sometimes putting his feet in the pillow case on the underside of my pillow.  When he wasn't kicking me in the head (literally), he was laying beside me and smacking me in the face.  It was almost a relief when both the boys woke up at 7 Saturday morning.

Saturday morning, we canned tomatoes.  Mom had them all washed, dad scalded them, I cored and skinned them, and Brian and Mom packed them into cans.  It was a pretty smooth operation (other than the tomato I somehow squirted on the ceiling) and we were all done around noon.  After a delicous beef fajita lunch, Brian and I tried to get the boys to nap.

Notice, I said TRIED.

All four of us crawled into the queen bed in the upstairs bedroom, but only 2 of us really wanted to take a nap.  At first, Brian and I were both irritated, as we were so tired from Friday night we just wanted them to go to sleep so we could take a quick nap.  The boys had other plans.  They were crawling on us, crawling down under the covers to the end of the bed playing "tent", giggling, laughing, and just playing.  Eventually, I couldn't hold onto the anger, and I just started laughing with them.  Honestly, it is an afternoon that I will remember for quite some time - all 4 of us in bed just laughing and making memories.

After 40 minutes, I gave up, and headed downstairs to shower for church.  The boys followed.  Jackson wanted to take a shower (they didn't have baths the night before since it was late when we arrived), so we gave the boys a shower in my parents new shower.  The boys loved it!  After their shower, we tucked them onto the couch to watch the Cars movie, and they both went to sleep.

Brian stayed with the boys while I went to church with my parents.  After church, Brian and I headed off to my class reunion and my parents babysat.  I'm not sure who had a better time - us, my kids or my parents!

In order to avoid "meltdown" like happened last time we left the boys with my parents, my mom decided they would take the boys to the Dairy Treat for dinner.  So, we strapped the boys in their car seats, and sent them to town for dinner.  The boys looked a little confused when they were pulling away since Pawpaw was driving, and Mommy and Daddy were waving goodbye, but not a tear was shed.  Success!

The boys ate chicken nuggets and french fries for dinner, but the main attraction at the Dairy Treat is ice cream.  My parents got them chocolate ice cream in a cup, and the boys were so excited because it had a FACE!  We are still hearing about the face on the ice cream!

When Brian and I got home later that night (or early the next morning I guess), mom and dad were up watching the race, and the boys were fast asleep in their "blanket beds" on the living room floor.  Not wanting a repeat of Friday night, we left them on the floor, and I crawled on the couch for a good nights rest.

Sunday morning we heard all about the face on the ice cream, and how much fun it was sleeping on the floor!  Lincoln now asks if he can sleep on the floor every night.  The boys definitely enjoyed their time with Mawmaw and Pawpaw!

Brian went to church Sunday morning while I fed the boys breakfast, packed things up, and got everyone dressed and ready for the day.  We went to visit Great Grandma for a little while, and then headed to the fair (more on this in another post).  It was late when we got home (after 7:30 Sunday night), and we were all exhausted, but it was all worth it!  Thanks again Mawmaw and Pawpaw for a great weekend!

First day of Chickadees

On Tuesday, September 4, our vacation came to a close.  We had such a great week, just spending time together as a family.

The boys were very spoiled on vacation - sleeping in, watching Mickey Mouse, a trip to the zoo, and of course fun time with their cousins.  So, getting woken up at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, they weren't very happy.  They insisted they weren't going back to Toddlers, and they were going to the zoo instead.

Obviously, we knew the daycare drop off wasn't going to be easy.  And they boys were right, they weren't going back to Toddlers - they were going to Chickadees.  A new room, new teachers, and a new drop off routine.  To say the least, it wasn't pretty.

We pulled up to school, and parked in front of the main door.  We opened the van door, and Miss Jessica came out to get the boys.  Lincoln started crying immediately, which then upset Jackson.  Miss Jessica came around the van and got Jackson out first, walked him over to the other side, and then took Lincoln out of the van.  They were both crying so hard, and I was trying to reassure them that everything was ok, but I was crying too.  It's so hard to be away from them all day after getting 10 whole days with them, and even harder when they were so upset!

As we drove away, I dried my tears, and quietly contemplated how we could make it work for me to be a stay at home mom.

I called later to check on how they were doing, and Miss Sally assured me they were adjusting quite well.  Lincoln was having a hard time with things, but the staff was very sensitive, and worked hard to keep him involved with the group, and distracted from missing Mommy and Daddy.

My fears were relieved when we picked them up that night.  Both the boys greeted us with huge smiles, and lots of chatter on the way home about their first day at Chickadees.  They had lunch - a sandwich, salad, and apples!  Oh - and they took a nap too!  And they played outside with all their friends.

Dropoffs were rough all week long, but they got a little bit better each day.  By Friday, they didn't even shed a tear until they were inside the Chickadees door.

Time.  Things will get better with time.  I remind myself of that, for as much as I would love to be home with them all day, I also see the positive aspects of daycare.  The boys learn so much , things that I wouldn't even know how to teach them.  And they are learning socialization skills for the future.  I have no doubt that they will be confident little boys and be much more successful when they get into the heart of their schooling.  Until then, I put on a smile each morning, wave goodbye, and continue watching my little babies turn into amazing boys each and every day.

The silly green guy

Here is Cincinnati, apartment and condo complexes try many different things to attract attention to themselves.  Sometimes they have big signs out front, or they pay people to put on weird animal costumes and stand at their entrances and wave.  The latest thing are inflatables - thin tubes that are bright colored like red or green, and about 20 feet tall.  They shoot up in the air, but then whip around in the breeze, sometimes bending and snapping back up.  And of course, the top is fringed like hair, they have arms, and they have a face on them.

We see them frequently, and the boys are continuously looking for them.

There is a green one at the apartments where I lived when I first moved to Cincy, and we pass it each night on the way home from work.  I'm not sure how it started...probably just a comment about the inflatable dancing or something.  But as usual, the boys have put their own little touch on it - so every night, as we pull up to the stop sign by it, we hear Jackson:  "It's the silly green guy and he's doing the Pokey Pokey"! (otherwise know as the Hokey Pokey....)

Where does he come up with this stuff?

Willinger invasion - Labor Day weekend

It had been forever since we had a whole weekend to just relax and spend time with my sister and her family.  I really don't remember the last time we got together just to get together - not for a birthday party, Relay fundraiser, or other reason.  Labor Day weekend was LONG overdue!

RJ, Lyn and their 3 kids arrived Friday night around 6:00.  We all enjoyed a great dinner (if I do say so myself), crazy kid time, and lots of beers.  Those are the 3 things that are always constant when we get together - food, drinks, and noise - what else would you expect with 5 kids ages 4 and under?

Saturday morning, Lyn, Aaron and I took the 4 older kids to the pool.  It was a bit chilly when you first got in, but warmed up very quickly.  The kids loved it!  Definitely more pool time together next summer!

After a late breakfast, we put the kids down for naps, and it was football time.  We watched football all afternoon, snacked, and enjoyed some more adult beverages.  I made Peach Sangria - DELISH!  Can't wait to share it with Mom and Lyn at Hocking Hills in a few weeks!

Sunday morning I made breakfast burritos, then we walked over to Aaron's house (ALL of us - 5 kids included).  Lyn and RJ hadn't seen Aaron's landscaping that he worked so hard on this summer, or his bathroom renovation.
It's probably about a mile walk, so Nash and Knox were in the stroller, Lylah walked, and we took our wagon.  Lincoln was fine with riding in the wagon, but Jackson wanted to walk.  I have to say, he was a trouper cause I made him keep up with everyone.  He walked almost the whole way to Aarons - I carried him the last little bit as he was getting distracted by the rocks.
We checked out the landscaping and the bathroom, then we just hung out for a little bit.  The kids ate Oreos and drank water, and the adults just chilled.  After an hour or so, we decided we needed to head back before the rains came.  We convinced Aaron to walk with us!  Somehow, my kids ended up in RJ's stroller, and Nash and Knox were in our wagon!  However, halfway back to our house, Nash was falling asleep, so we switched him and Lincoln out!

Back at the house, we put the kids down for their naps again, and the rest of us hit the showers.  Then we packed coolers and prepared to head downtown for Riverfest.

Riverfest is Cincinnati's big Labor Day fireworks celebration.  We have great seats in the parking lot of my work.  We came downtown around 5:00, and hung out in the parking lot all evening.  We enjoyed lunchmeat sandwiches, chips, fruit, drinks, and Oreo cheesecakes!  All was good until the rains came shortly before 8.  The kids huddled in the back of our van watching to stay dry and watch a movie.

The fireworks still went off, despite the downpour.  We were all huddled under the overpass, thankfully staying pretty dry.  The noise from the fireworks scared the boys (and I think it hurt Jackson's ears too), so they sat in the van with the windows closed and watched the fireworks.  They loved all the bright lights - just didn't like the noise.  I'm still hearing how the fireworks are scary, and that the boys don't want to go see fireworks again!  It was a late night getting home, and everyone headed off to bed.

Monday morning was a lazy day.  I don't think Lyn was too excited about heading home.  We were all in our jammies until 11 - we even watched a movie!  We eventually headed to Deweys for lunch.  The kids loved watching the cooks make the pizzas, and laughed when the cooks would throw the flour at them!  After a fabulous lunch, we were off to Graeters for dessert - RJ made it very clear that he was not leaving Cincinnati without some Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip ice cream in his belly!

The packed up and headed home mid-afternoon.  The silence replaced all the noise and chaos from the weekend, and the 200 miles that separate our homes suddenly felt like 2000 miles.  I'm so very lucky to have my sister and her family in our lives, and only wish that we could have weekends like that every weekend.

Vacation Part III - Lincoln's new smile...

On Monday of vacation week, we noticed a small white spot on Lincoln's gum, just beneath the tooth he chipped back in April.  So, Wednesday, Lincoln made his second trip to the dentist.

I wasn't sure what to expect this time.  Not that he was bad last time, but he just gets shy around people he doesn't know.

Well, I had nothing to worry about.

I went to meet a friend for lunch, then stopped home to pick him up for his appointment.  He was ready.  Lincoln - Mommy, we go bye bye?
Mommy - Yes, Lincoln.  Do you know where we are going?
Lincoln - Go and show them my teeth.  (followed by a big smile, revealing his lower gum with the infection)

When we got to the dentist office, he walked up the flight of stairs on his own.  He arched right down the hallway, and immediately found the toys.  When they called us back to the exam room, he walked on his own, following the nurse, and climbed right up into the exam chair by himself (in April, he wasn't leaving my lap).

The doctor came in and started talking to him, and he was so good.  We put some giraffe sunglasses on him, and she gave him a Gameboy (foreign to us) and put Dora on it.  He opened his mouth right up and let her take a look, without even a fight.

They wanted to do an x-ray to see what was going on, and I was so proud when he hopped out of the exam chair and again followed the nurse to the x-ray room.  He climbed up in the chair, and he let the nurse put the "blanket" over him.  They got the x-ray on the first try!

After the x-ray, he picked out his sticker, and marched back to the exam chair to find the Gameboy/Dora.

Unfortunately, his tooth that he chipped had died sometime since April, and was causing an infection in his gums.  The tooth had to come out.

I was nervous.  Lincoln was great.

He continued watching his Gameboy, and only became aggravated when they put the laughing gas over his nose.  It kept slipping down and blocking his view of the Gameboy.  The doctor got a few shots in his gum to numb it, and then removed the gas, as it wasn't working.  Lincoln squirmed a bit with the additional shots, and he cried a bit when the tooth was actually pulled, but settled down very quickly (once Mommy scooped him up with a big hug).

He was so excited to get a balloon animal - a yellow puppy dog - and he couldn't WAIT to show Jackson.  He also got to choose a toy out of the bucket, and picked a flower ring with a smiley face on it.

The tears were gone before we even left the dentist office.

Such a big boy....

And blowing bubbles!

A picture's worth a thousand words

And boy, do these totally tell the story!  Lincoln is our TV addict!

Thankfully he had the remote facing the wrong way, or who knows what may have been recorded on our DVR!!!

Vacation Part II - The Zoo

Monday was a rough day at home.  The boys were excited to be home with Mommy and Daddy, but neither of them wanted to listen or behave. In an effort to get them to nap Monday afternoon, we told them we may go to the zoo the next day.  Our bribery attempt didn't work.  They didn't nap, and the zoo was all they could think about the rest of the day.

Tuesday morning, when they woke up, we heard them talking about how they were going to the zoo! It was super cute, and frankly, we weren't sure we would survive another day at home without taking them, so, off to the zoo we went.

Getting ready to go to the zoo was challenging. They were just so excited, and didn't want to sit still to get dressed.  I really thought we would be dragging these boys out of the zoo 5 minutes after we went in.  Thankfully, that wasn't the case.  When we got to the zoo, we had the two best behaved boys in the world.

They even sat down and let me take their picture just inside the gate:

The boys walked most of the time, and were so excited to see all the animals. They kept saying they wanted to see the cows and the puppy dogs!  We were lucky and saw one woman walking a dog, and they had cows in the petting zoo.

Later that day at home, I asked the boys what their favorite things at the zoo were.

Lincoln:  the pigs (we didn't see any pigs!) and the cows
Jackson:  the playground

Here are some pics of them on the playground:
The boys were hesitant to stand by the statues of animals and have their pictures taken, but there was one that caught their attention.....probably cause they thought it was an alligator (but different than Pawpaw's gator)

I tried to get Jackson to stick his HEAD in the crocodile mouth (that would have been an awesome picture), but he was even hesitant to put his hand in!

One last picture to share - one of my favorites as it captures the personality of my little man so well...

We spent about 3 hours at the zoo, and went home with 2 very happy boys!

In the parking lot, we ate some "daddy sandwiches" we had brought along for lunch, along with some chips and crackers.  The boys napped on the drive home, and we all shared milkshakes when we got home.   Great vacation day, and many memories made!

Lincoln goes to church

I've mentioned several times that Brian and I have been going to church separately, as it's too difficult to take the boys right now.  They don't understand how to be quiet or sit still.

On Sunday after Jackson's surgery, Brian went to church at 9, and I was planning on going at 11.  Lincoln expressed an interest in going to church with me, so I thought we would try it.

He was great!  He was a totally different kid since it was just the 2 of us.  And I enjoyed getting to spend some one on one time with Lincoln, after spending so much time with Jackson.

The first half of church, he was mostly focused on the snacks we had brought with us.  When we were sitting, he was eating, but he was very good about putting them away when it was time to stand up.  However, shortly into the homily, the snacks ran out.  The books came out of the bag next, which was fine, other than he wanted me to read them to him.  It took a few times asking him to quietly read them to himself, but he finally caught on.  He read his books through the homily, then just hung out with me during the eucharistic blessing.

After Communion, he was getting a bit restless.  So many people leave after Communion, and there was more space around us.  He kept crawling up on the pew, standing up, and then jumping off.  So, church ended with me taking him out while he was saying "No Mommy!  I behave!"

Overall though, it was a huge step in the right direction.  Planning to take Lincoln a few more times alone, then we'll attempt a trip with Jackson by himself.  Maybe by Christmas we can all go to church together again?

Vacation Part I - Tubes for Jackson

My first day of vacation in late August was spent at the hospital.  OK - not the WHOLE day.  It was only about 3 hours, but still.

On Thursday, August 23, Jackson had tubes put in his ears.

Here is how our day went.

I woke Jackson up at 5:00 a.m. so that he could have some "breakfast" to start the day.  Breakfast is a term I use loosely, as he could only have clear liquids.  What clear liquids do you feed a child so that they aren't hungry?  Jello.  Yes, that's right Jello at 5 in the morning!  He loves jello, so I thought I would be the best mom ever.  However, he wanted "the white stuff" (Cool Whip) on top - and I couldn't give it to him.  Epic fail.

Here he is at 5:15, eating his jello!

He ate some jello, and drank some apple juice.  He actually did pretty well for the next few hours with so little to eat and drink.  He asked for some water twice, but I explained to him that he couldn't have any till after he saw Dr. Myer, and that seemed to satisfy him.

We headed to the hospital around 8:30, filled out the paperwork.  Then the fun began as they tried to get his blood pressure and his oxygen levels.  Jackson is a very stubborn little boy.  The nurse said he was the first kids she has not been able to get a read for his oxygen levels!  He completely freaked out when they put a bracelet on his ankle (and one on Brian and me), and he was having NO part of putting that hospital gown on.  Everyone involved knew how strong our little man was - and they must have talked about it in the OR too, as the doctor even commented on it!

Here we are after the fight to put the hospital gown on!

Overall, It was a similar experience to when Lincoln had his surgery 2 years ago, except for the anesthesia. Two years ago, we handed Lincoln over and then they administered the anesthesia after we left the room. This time, I held Jackson as they put him to sleep. Any mother can tell you, it's not a pleasant experience to feel your child struggling in your arms, then just go lifeless.  I won't lie - there were tears shed, and not just by Jackson.

The procedure took about 10 minutes, and everything went well.  By 11:00, we were on our way home.

Jackson had seen balloons in the gift shop, so we stopped at Kroger on the way home.  He picked out 2 simple yellow balloons - one for him, and one to share with Lincoln.  What a sweet boy.

The rest of the afternoon, Jackson cuddled with me on the couch.  We watched the Cars movie, and took a nap together.  When we woke up, his pain meds had worn off, so we had a 10 minute meltdown, but then he took his medicine and settled right back down.

Friday, we sent Lincoln to daycare, and Daddy to work, and enjoyed another Jackson and Mommy day at home.  It's so nice to spend one on one time with the boys.  We had a great day, and I baked cookies for his daycare teachers while he took a nap!

The tubes seem to be working.  Please pray they continue to keep our little man feeling like himself!
